Wild Storms

We’ve had a series of wild thunderstorms in Calgary. Last night, the power went out just before a huge flash of lightning and a crash of thunder. We groped around for flashlights and waited for the power to come back on. When it didn’t, we checked outside to see how far the outage stretched. Street lights were on all around our block – only our block and two others in a string were out, and we could smell something burning.
We watched a show on a laptop computer, by candlelight, and headed to bed.
Just as we were getting to sleep we heard a truck drive by to check it out. Then another, larger truck. And then a third, even bigger. When I checked on the noise at 4 am, a huge crane was parked by our driveway working at the power pole in the alley behind our house.
We have power again, but our PVR seems to be fried, and we’re without hard-wired internet access (although, oddly, we have wireless).
I’m writing this on a little notebook, hoping we’ll get a new router installed tonight so I’ll have regular access tomorrow. And a printer. Our printer is plugged in through the router, so fried router means no printer, which is very painful for a writer!
