I was born in Edmonton and grew up in Edmonton and Calgary. I loved writing as a child but had nothing to say, so I went on to other things, first a Bachelor's Degree in History, and then a Masters Degree in Environmental Design (Environmental Science), both from the University of Calgary. I worked as a public involvement consultant and trained as a mediator; then I discovered that I liked writing even better. I have a Post-graduate Certificate of Creative Writing from Humber College.

I live in Calgary with my family and a collection of visitors including small humans, rabbits, squirrels, birds, and the occasional cat checking out the garden.

When I was a kid, I read all the time (I still do). I'd read ahead in my school books, hide a novel inside whatever I was supposed to be reading in class but had probably already finished, and read walking home from school. I did stop reading to cross streets, and I never walked into anything. I really was very good at it!

My favorite books as a child:

Winnie the Pooh, by A.A. Milne
Swallows and Amazons, by Arthur Ransome
  The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkein

I'm not at all athletic, but I did cycle up the Oregon coast with my younger sister many years ago. Well, half the coast. Into a head wind the entire way. In the fall, as it got cooler. We had to shake ice off our tent in the morning, and change shoes to ride when we were ready to go, because the shoes in our bags were warmer than the shoes on our feet. And none of that mattered. It was astoundingly beautiful.

My greatest claim to fame prior to writing was making two thirds of a sock for the Jackie Chan movie, Shanghai Noon. (To admire the sock, check out the grey-haired lady knitting on the train.)
