Saturday afternoon I attended a workshop with Quincy Troupe, an American poet who plays with jazz rhythms in his poetry. He said he memorized John Coltrane solos, and wrote poetry to their rhythms.

He even speaks in rhythm; I felt like I’d spent the afternoon listening to jazz, as he entertained us with stories and read poems.

Now I need to make the leap into playing with this in my own writing. I don’t write poetry, but I want to play with the voices of each character. What if I found a piece of music, or a musician, to define the rhythm of each character? Miles Davis, Beethoven, cheesy elevator music?
