There – I’ve said it. And it’s finally true. Bathroom fully renovated (and it’s lovely), hole in the bedroom wall patched (cut to reach under the tub next door), the front entry braced on concrete posts, with a new door, drywall repaired, and electrical weirdness fixed. Bills paid, and they didn’t explode as the complications piled up.

We are greatly relieved. Living with a bathroom renovation is nothing like living in the third world, or even camping, but it’s definitely awkward. There’s nothing like finishing a shower and remembering all the towels were dumped in the back entry when the towel hooks came down.

My editor found another error in The Veil Weavers. She called last night, concerned about a chapter opening near the end of the story. ‘Who did this?’

When I answered, she said, ‘but she’s dead’, and I realized I’d written it before I’d decided to kill her off. Oops. I’ll do a little rewriting today…

I went for a walk on Nose Hill on Sunday. When I sat in the grass it was so quiet the sound of my breathing was louder than the sounds around me. Then the wind picked up and rustled the grasses, and a bird called from down in the valley.

I walked into the valley, into an aspen forest. The landscape on the hill is horizontal, but the aspen adds a verticalness I love. It always feels as if I’m stepping into a fairy tale, where you never know what you might find around the next corner.
